Swedish brand Grenna Polkagriskokeri follows a 166-year-old recipe to make their airy, sweet, melt-in-your-mouth polkagris (sugar sticks). The confectionary’s bakers tediously boil, stretch, roll and cut the vibrant candy—the same techniques used by inventor Amalia Erikkson in 1859—into dozens of unique flavors. This set includes Grenna’s most popular styles: sweet-spicy Peppermint, juicy Pear and tangy, berry-forward Tutti Frutti.
The polkagris’s light and airy texture puts run-of-the-mill taffy and candy canes to shame. How does Grenna achieve it? The bakers work the dough by hand and then stretch it on a large hook. While the sugar stick might feel hard in its wrapper, it will pleasantly crumble and melt in your mouth with each bite. Each polkagris is inspected for quality; the candy must be the perfect shape and weight before it’s wrapped in charming packaging and shipped off to you. Traditional Swedish polkagris are hard to find stateside.
