This squared bowl was crafted by artisan potters in Gifu, a mountainous prefecture considered the top ceramic-producing region in Japan. This is an Oribe ware piece, which is an almost 500-year-old ceramic style known for its chunky look, asymmetrical shape, decorative painting and signature green glaze (made by firing copper dioxide). This eye-catching piece acts as the perfect serving bowl or centerpiece. And each bowl—which features a speckled green glaze and bold grass-like motifs in the interior and exterior—is one of a kind due to its handmade nature.

What is Oribe Ware?
It’s a natural pottery style that traces back to the 16th and 17th centuries during the Momoyama Period in Japan. Oribe ware reflects wabi-sabi techniques (embracing imperfections and transience) in its handmade designs. The style was named after Furuta Oribe, a renowned tea master who influenced unique traits like rich glaze colors, playful and asymmetrical shapes, decorating motifs of nature or geometric patterns and the use of contrast.
